HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES: WIKE TASKS MILITARY ON THOROUGH RECRUITMENT PROCESS

PORT HAR-COURT- Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State on Tuesday called on the Nigerian army to critically review the recruitment processes of its staff to verify allegations of human rights violations by its agents.

Wike granted the charge when the Presidential Inquiry Committee to review the armed forces' compliance with human rights obligations and rules of engagement made a courtesy visit to him at Government House in Port Harcourt, .
Wike, represented by his deputy Dr. Ipalibo Banigo, expressed confidence in the panel's ability to develop a sustainable mechanism to address human rights violations by security agencies. The Governor said it was unfortunate that there had been several alleged cases of brutality and violation of human rights by security agencies due to the activities of a few staff members. Wike said, "You will receive notes from us on the threat of the Elections Act by security agencies." There is an urgent need to look at the recruitment process. Are they qualified? Are they patriotic? "He reiterated his commitment to the unity of the country, adding that he would not support any secessionist program because God, in his infinite wisdom, had assembled Nigeria alone and the country would continue to remain one. Previously, the chairman of the Presidential Inquiry Committee, Justice Bauble Abraham George Willill, told the governor that the group had received notes from various stakeholders and had begun its meeting. Georgewill, however, called on the people of South-South states to give themselves the opportunity to make presentations.
