Do you know friends or family members who are struggling with bodily problems or eating disorders like bulimia and anorexia and are still in a desperate attempt to lose weight? In addition to helping them access professional help, here are five very important things you need to know.
* Although the person has the symptoms of a medical illness, it still can not be fully explained as a physical disorder. This is basically an exaggeration of what are probably small defects in their bodies.
* The obsessive focus of the person is so much that it causes clinically significant stress or depression in the person. This, in turn, forces the person to avoid social gatherings and communication in general, as their levels of self-confidence diminish.
* According to the BDD Foundation, Michael Jackson, Andy Warhol, Franz Kafka, Sylvia Plath and Shirley Manson are well-known characters in history who have suffered a mental disorder because of their distorted understanding of their physical appearances.
* People with BDD begin to demand attention and validity. They feel constantly pressurized and assume that people do not find them attractive enough. This type of behavior makes them difficult to focus on their daily work and hinders their regular routine. Students with BDD, for example, have difficulty concentrating on their studies and their performance suffers.

* Obsessive and repetitive behaviors are a central part of BDD. Individuals with BDD develop repetitive, body-centered behaviors such as hair stretching, skin cutting, cheek bites, or mirroring. This happens in response to concerns they have with their appearances.
