Mourinho calls for end to League Cup

Jose Mourinho admitted that English football would be better without the League Cup, only seven months after winning the competition with Manchester United.

Mourinho celebrated the first large shelf of his united kingdom when his team beat Southampton 3-2 at Wembley last season.

But after watching United putting forward their trophy defense with a 4-1 victory over second-tier strugglers Burton at a much lower capacity than Old Trafford on Wednesday, Mourinho conceded that the tournament often does more harm than good.

Mourinho showed where the League Cup ranks on its list of priorities by making nine changes while Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial scored the goals of United.

Even Burton boss Nigel Clough, more concerned about the survival of the Championship, made nine changes to reduce the link with virtual reserve conflict status.

The fact that Burton considers the first weeks of the league season as more important than a trip to Old Trafford highlights the problems with a competition that Mourinho thinks can be dispensed.

"You know, if the competition is an official competition, it is important for Manchester United and for me as a manager and I want players to think the same way," Mourinho told the BBC.

"If you ask me, can English football survive or even better without this competition?

"Perhaps we would be cooler for European competitions, for example.

"But we have this competition, we have to respect, we have to respect the sponsors, we must respect the opponents, we must respect the professionalism of all of us trying to do the best.

"If we can win it, we win it. If we do not win it, the opponents are better than us."

Mourinho has won the League Cup four times, including three with Chelsea, while United has won the trophy five times.

His criticisms of a competition that took place since the 1960-61 season were held one night when Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal all scored the last 16, despite the under-power teams.
